New Members Wanted

Over the years, the Palo Alto Golf Club has enjoyed high membership numbers often reaching the 600 mark.  Since 2005, we have seen a decline in those numbers of almost 25 percent.  When we began our most recent membership drive on October 1, 2008, we had 447 members.  As of April 1, 2009, that number was only 385.

Most of you know at least one golfer who does not belong to a club but plays a lot of golf.  You might also know a casual golfer who has thought about joining a club.  The next time you see someone who might be interested, tell him or her about the benefits of being a member.  If nothing else, he or she can be guaranteed a tee time at least twice each month with an opportunity to win pro shop credits.

Looking for Help

The club's Board of Directors was recently approached with an offer to switch management of the club website to a commercial firm, Golf Fusion.  The Board elected not to do so.  However, the club must develop a succession plan for maintaining the website including membership functions and on-line tournament signups if the current webmaster, John Frykland, should retire.

Therefore, we are looking for a club member with an information technology (IT) or web development background who would be willing to assist John, learn the ins and outs of the club IT function, and eventually take his place.  John receives a small monthly stipend as would his successor.  If you are interested helping the club, please contact any member of the Board of Directors.

Request Tee Times for a Tournament

Earlier this year the club allowed players to request their tee times for the Red, White and Blue tournament.  Originally, the idea was to offer this feature only for home events but, after evaluating the pros and cons, the board has decided to use it for certain away events as well.  When you sign up online and then click on the "My Tournaments" link, you can click a link next to selected events and request the tee time that you want.

If you have a foursome that you'd like to play with, get them all to sign up online and request the same time.  Remember, these are only requests and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

Rich Bin is Back

Rich Bin is back as our head professional.  Rich left a couple of years ago to take the Director of Golf position at Coyote Creek.  Last fall Coyote Creek was sold and the new owners brought in their own staff.  Rich and Brad Lozares, our Director of Golf, started talking and before you could say "Fore", Rich was in the saddle again.  Welcome back, Rich.

2009 TOC Points Standings

With two of our major competitions completed and the final two rounds of the Match Play Championship coming up this month, the TOC points chase is well under way.  The standings have changed significantly since the last newsletter with several new names appearing and others changing position.

Patrick Beaulieu has jumped to the top of the pack having collected points in eight events since the season began last November.  Tracy Powell has slipped into second while Tournament Chairman,
Jim Mayer, has jumped from ninth to third.  Keith Arends and Glen Esquivel round out the top five.

Positions should change dramatically when the Match Play Championship concludes on April 25 and all the points are awarded to those who won at least one match.  The overall winner in each flight will walk away with 120 points.
