For 2009 the NCGA has reduced the number of members required to send six qualifiers on to the next round of competition.  With our 450 plus members, this year's event saw the participants vying for two qualifying spots in each of three flights.  That format was a good thing for the first flight since only two players managed to break net par over the two days.  It seems that hitting middle irons out of the long rough was not conducive to low scores.

In the Pine Valley (first) Flight, Howard Stein, last year's low gross winner, took that honor again along with one of the qualifying spots.  Patrick Beaulieu, who has moved into the TOC points lead with his low net prize, took the other qualifying spot.

In the Cypress Point Flight, Ken Ditty, our resident NCAA basketball official, shot two consistent and low rounds to take low gross and one of the qualifying spots.  The second qualifying spot and the low net prize was decided in a three way playoff among Rick Deutscher, Bob Lall and David Farwell with Rick winning in extra holes.

Finally, in the Bandon Dunes Flight, where the scores were really low, Jun Barron shot an unbelievable 18 under par 126 for the two days to win low gross and to qualify for the next round.  The NCGA handicap folks will undoubtedly be interested in those two rounds.  The second qualifying spot went to new member Ian Cox who joined the club back in April and played very will over the two days.

Congratulation to all who placed and especially to the qualifiers who will be playing the semi-finals on September 17 at a local course.  Those making through the next round will play in the finals at Poppy Ridge on October 26 and 27.
