Prize Money

Players in our tournaments are interested in prize money and its distribution.  The system in use currently for allocating club money and player money to the prize fund goes back a long way.  It can, of course, be modified by the Board, but any such changes should be made carefully and their impact on the club's budget analyzed.

Following are the official policies adopted by the Board:

1.  The player's entry fee includes an additional $9 contribution for each tournament day.  Of this, $1 is allocated to help fund the TOC at the end of the year; $1 is allocated to pay the entry fees for our players who qualify for an NCGA event; and $7 is allocated to the actual tournament prize fund.

2.  The club then contributes $6 for each player in a single day event and $12 for each player in a two day event.  This creates a fund of $13 per player in a single day event and $26 per player for a two day event.

3.  For all individual events, there will be a low gross prize in each flight (unless the Board changes this policy once again).  In team events, only low net prizes will be awarded.

4.  The general goal is to pay prize money to at least 1/3 of the field.  When in doubt pay more players less money.

5.  When setting up the prize money for away tournaments be sensitive to prize fund money which must be redeemed in certificates at the away course.  In general, our players do not like these certificates but many clubs do require them.  Try to set the amounts so that the certificates come out in neat multiples.  Usually a course will work with the TC if the number doesn't come out exactly right.

6.  If you are looking for examples of payouts, the results for the last few years are on the web.

The TC should keep a spread sheet showing the number of players in each tournament and the amounts paid out.  There should also be an average payout per player column to verify that we are keeping on target.  It is certainly not going to break the club budget to go over the amounts available to make the numbers come out even, but this should be tracked closely.  A copy of this spread sheet should be given to the Treasurer along with the checks after the tournament has closed.
