Match Play Tournament Setup and Format

The following procedures will be used to govern the PAGC Match Play Tournament.  The goals are to insure fair competition, increase participation, and identify the club’s Scratch Play Champion.

The Championship Flight: In order to identify the club’s Scratch Match Play Champion, a scratch flight will be formed from players who voluntarily sign up for it.  Every effort will be made to encourage the best players in the club to enter this flight to create a 16 player field.  If this flight cannot be filled, an 8 person flight will be created from those with the lowest current index.  Such a flight would have a 36 hole final and no consolation bracket (first round losers would receive a refund of half the tournament fee).  If there is a consolation bracket for this flight, it will also be played at scratch.

Handicap Flights:  The non-championship players will be ordered by index into flights of 16 players. Only full flights will be created.  Priority will be given to those who sign up first.  Mail-in’s will be logged at the end of the date their entry is postmarked.  If only a few spots are needed to create an additional flight, the tournament chairman will make an effort to get the entries up to a number divisible by 16.  If there are about 8 players left after this process, the tournament chairman may create a special ‘consolation flight’ for those players who signed up last.

Consolation Brackets: There will be a consolation (or ‘losers’) bracket in each handicap flight (and possibly in the championship flight) so that all players will be able to play at least 2 matches.  Players finishing in the places noted below will receive prize money and TOC points.

Flight Winner   Consolation Winner
Flight Runner-up   Consolation Runner-up
Quarter Finalists

Seeding:  Seeding in all handicap flights will be done so as to minimize the handicap differentials.  (This means seeding 1 thru 16, right down the bracket.)  In the championship flight, seeding will be done by random draw.

Publicity:  The Board will make every effort to communicate this policy to the members so that those few who sign up late and do not get into the tournament will have no excuses.
